the secret to making friends abroad

Making friends in a strange new country can be an intimidating thing. For Website Wednesday this week, I am featuring the website called Meetup. Originally started after the unfortunate events of 9/11, the goal of Meetup is to get people together with common interests. When I first heard about it, I was totally turned off to the desperation of meeting friends online. Online dating is creepy enough, and I was extremely fearful of the fact that Meetup was just another online dating platform, in the form of groups as opposed to one-on-one.

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Thanks to Meetup, I have met some awesome people and some amazing friends. What’s great about it is that you join groups based on your current location and your interests. I was actively involved in a few of the Auckland groups and used it a couple times in both Turkey and Singapore. I went hiking to some places I had never heard of. I climbed trees like a friggin’ monkey. I went to a SuperBowl party with fellow Giants fans and ate wings (nowhere near as good as in the States, but still, football, beer, wings – you really can’t go wrong).

Thank you, Meetup, for making sure that I was never alone!
